Hello world! As some of you have noticed, Alex Whorms has released a new music video for her track, People in Love, and let me tell you this project was a labour of love!
It began on a sweltering Sunday; Alex and I drove downtown to the Mulberry Street Coffeehouse where we met with local photographer Jessie Golem to plan a photo shoot. However, after an hour of brainstorming and indulging we had a better idea – an outdoor styled shoot and video, complete with full band, friends and a piano full of flowers (how cool is that?!).
First Alex needed to find a piano and get it to Jessie’s backyard – no small task. We worried about how we could pull off this move and where this piano could be stored. With a little help from Kijiji, five strong friends volunteering their time, and some borrowed equipment, the job turned out to be laughably simple (thank you Dan, Adam, Mike, Chris, Garik, Paddy and Tristan)!
After this was done, I think Alex bought almost every fake flower in our local dollar store…
essie and Alex decorated the yard the day before the shoot, arranging paper crane chains around the willow tree and filling the piano with beautiful blooms. Meanwhile, I was riding the TTC, dragging home a giant fresh floral centerpiece from a friend’s wedding.
The day of the shoot was so very exciting. To avoid the summer heat, Alex and I arrived on site before 7 am and I managed to get our makeup finished (yes I do makeup too - I received my degree from YouTube Academy, LOL). Jessie began to shoot still photos of Alex as Konrad, Mike and Nige arrived. We then had the opportunity to take some really great band photos, and some really silly band photos.
Our extras arrived: Nige’s girlfriend, Mackenzie Churchill, and our friends Supriya Singh, Kyle Ansilio and Britt Edwards! The video shoot took less than an hour. With a little bit of choreography, Jessie had the footage she needed in one continuous take.
In hindsight, it’s funny to think about the way we worried over every little detail of this shoot when, ultimately, everything came together very smoothly.
Despite “People in Love”’s tongue in cheek criticism of, well, people in love…this video wouldn’t have been made without the people we love! The love and support that surrounds the Alex Whorms Band, is quite simply amazing. It also goes to show that you don't need a huge budget or fancy production to put together and realize an artistic creation!
